"The visual uniformity of Hebrew letters is challenging for the beginning reader who must pay close attention to every visual clue to correctly identify words similar in length as well as shape."
What researchers
say about
Hebrew letters:
Storybook Hebrew’s stories and pictures help native English speakers more easily learn the Hebrew alphabet.

Being raised Jewish in a small Southern town with Baker for a last name makes me the last person you’d expect to create an easy way to memorize the alef bet.

For decades I have used tricks I call mental Velcro to hook what I want to recall to something easy to remember. These memory enhancing techniques helped me learn the Hebrew alphabet in a few days with a minimum of practice. The ease with which I accomplished this encouraged me to pen the stories and draw pictures for others to use.

I was also encouraged by the Hebrew letters themselves. The alef bet came alive as I wrote their stories that made me laugh and cry. I understand how some authors feel they are recording what their characters do and say.

The stories echo lessons from my upbringing. Help others. Be kind. Count blessings. Appreciate home and family. Keep promises. Be tolerant of differences, and don’t call your brother names even if he deserves it.

I sincerely hope you have as much fun learning the Hebrew alphabet this way as I had writing it.

Wishing you much success,

Doris Baker and the Alef Bet
